Welcome to U12’s
The Richard Hawks competition has started. This means that normal festivals are 'past history' and we are engaging in a more competitive environment with the boys of U12. We play 12 aside with a new player at 'number 8' compared to U11. Contested scrum is the major change to the rules.
The Richard Hawks competition has 4 levels: Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield. Each team is assigned in one of the 4 levels and Flying Kukris entered one team at Plate level. In practice this means we are playing the second teams of the major clubs in Hong Kong: Football Club, Sandy Bay, Stingrays and Valley. It is possible to promote or relegate from your group. Both Cup and Plate get silverware at each leg of the competition. We played matches of 15 minutes.
The first leg was the Tigerfest that was played at Sandy Bay on November 1. Flying Kukris squad consisted of 18 players with a number of new 'guys' like Constantine, Liam, Tom and Hanson. The first game against Sandy Bay was really a tough start, seems many players still needed to wake up at 13:37 on a Sunday afternoon. We lost 2-1, Tom scored the try in the last seconds of the game. Clearly far below our normal level. However against Valley it was picked up with a close draw 1-1 (try Andrew), we should have won this game... Anyway, we knew that we had to win 'big' in the last two games to have a chance to win the plate. And we did! We blew away Football Club with 5-1 (tries by Olliver, Jeffrey, Jayden, Justin and Tom). In the last game we had to make 4 tries for the 'winning' bonus point and again it worked out in the last minute, we beat Stingrays 4-1 (two tries by Olliver and Justin). A great recovery of a weak start and determination, skill and speed brought the first silverware.
